The film profiles Darwin, a Death Valley town with 35 citizens, including Ryal, a young FTM transgender man in the process of transition. While living in Darwin, Ryal is able to develop a closer relationship with his parents, who have struggled in the past to accept their son. You can watch the film now with this link.
PFLAG National has published Our Trans Loved Ones, and here’s a link to download your copy. Or, you can come to our monthly meeting (first Tuesday of each month, Neighborhood Church, 301. Debi Jackson — a self-described “conservative southern Baptist†mom from Alabama who wanted a boy — recently spoke in passionate defense of her six-year-old transgender daughter A.J. who began transitioning into a female appearance at age four.
In her heartfelt speech, Jackson describes her daughter’s transition as well as the parental intolerance and ignorant questions raised by others who blame Debi for her daughter’s transition:
“Kids have no idea what they want or who they are. My kid wants to be a dog! Should I let him?â€â€¦
“There’s a profound difference between wanting to be something in imaginary play and in declaring who you are insistently, consistently, and persistently — those are the 3 markers that set transgender children apart, and my daughter displayed all of them.â€
“Kids shouldn’t have to learn about sex at such a young age.â€
Well, I agree, so it’s a good thing that being transgender has nothing to do. Gender identity is strictly about how a person views him or herself on the inside and it is completely separate from who we are attracted to.â€
“God hates transgender people. They are sinners and going to hell.â€
My God taught us to love one another. Jesus sought out those who others rejected. Some people choose to embrace biblical verses that appear to say that transgender people are being wrong. I choose to focus on verses like I Samuel 16:7 which says “But the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Do not consider his appearance or his height for I have rejected him.’†The Lord does not look at the things that people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart. My daughter is a girl at her heart. She knows it.
According to PFLAG’s blog A Note To My Kid — a place where “ parents, families friends, and allies of the LGBTQ community the opportunity to share their unconditional love, via notes, photos, and videos†— Jackson has also “started a website for parents of transgender and gender nonconforming children: trans-parenting.com.

With nowhere else to turn, he returned to his friend Aubrey’s house. Her family once again took Corey in, this time permanently.
“Initially we set Corey’s bedroom up in our basement,†Dale explained. “We gathered what we could since he didn’t bring anything with him. His first bedroom in our home was made of walls with moving blankets tacked to the ceiling. There was a bed, a nightstand, an old dresser and a box fan. That kid was so freaking happy … Made me cry to see Corey with next to nothing and be happy about it.â€
Weeks later, Mindy and Dale filed a petition to formally adopt Corey. On the day of the court hearing, Corey’s birth family didn’t show up to contest the adoption.
“I want the world to know that Corey is a beautiful human being,†Mindy toldOut In Santa Cruz. â€I want the world to see Corey’s pain and know it is not necessary. Sexuality is such a small part of who we are. First and foremost Corey is a loving, genuine, caring, intelligent human being. Who he is attracted to and who he marries is of little significance.â€

The ruling was announced late Thursday evening. The order released around 10 p.m. stated the following:
“The Court finds Va. Const. Art. I, § 15-A, Va. Code §§ 20-45.2, 20-45.3, and any other Virginia law that bars same-sex marriage or prohibits Virginia’s recognition of lawful same-sex marriages from other jurisdictions unconstitutional. These laws deny Plaintiffs their rights to due process and equal protection guaranteed under the Fourteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution.”
